Mouse Pad, Brig "Mercury" Attacked by Two Turkish Ships

The historical story

The painting depicts the Russian brig Mercury, a small 20-gun sailing warship, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829.

On 14 May 1829, Mercury encountered two much larger Ottoman ships of the line:

• the Selimiye (about 110 guns)
• the Real Bey (about 74 guns)

Ordinarily, a ship as small as Mercury would have been expected to surrender or flee. Instead, under the command of Alexander Kazarsky, the crew fought for several hours. Rather than trying to sink the enemy outright, they aimed at the opponents' masts and rigging, damaging their ability to maneuver. Eventually, Mercury escaped despite being vastly outgunned.

The action became one of the most celebrated episodes in Russian naval history.
